Just behind water and tea, beer is the third most popular drink in the world. But depending on where you are, it can be a lot more expensive to enjoy.

Recent data has revealed the average price of a pint in different countries across the globe – and the results will either make you grateful or gutted to live here in the UK.

The most expensive pint, coming in at an extortionate £9.95, can be found in Doha, Qatar.

Unsurprisingly, the second priciest spot is Dubai, where the average pint will set you back £9.46, while Muscat, Oman came in third on the list at £8.76.

Then the Scandinavian bloc entered the chat, with Reykjavik, Iceland, and Oslo, Norway, taking fourth and fifth place at £8.41 and £7.97 respectively.

So, where did the UK rank?

According to the Finder report, the average cost of a pint here in Blighty is £5.50, making it the 11th most expensive out of 155 countries studied.

For Londoners however, this already sobering figure jumps up to an downright subdued £6.83. In fact, pubs in the big smoke charge more than double the world average.

Pint prices in the UK have been slowly creeping up for some time now, to the point even budget-friendly chains like Wetherspoons have been forced to hike prices.

From labour costs to commercial rent and the cost of production, there are genuine reasons for these increases. But forking out a day’s wages for a round still rankles.

On Reddit, London-based beer lovers recently lamented rising prices, with Lyta_Hall writing: ‘I got charged £8.40 for a pint in Greenwich and almost gave me a heart attack.’

Another, braydee89, claimed to have been charged £9.70 for a pint in Leyton, adding: ‘I’m still recovering from it.’

However depressing that might be for residents of the capital though, people living in Hull will be pleased to hear their city ranked cheapest in the UK, with the average pint only costing £3.68.

The world’s cheapest pint of beer

When it comes to the world’s most bargain beer, alongside the countries previously mentioned, neither the USA or Australia will quench your thirst.

You can also expect to pay more than a fiver for a pint in New Zealand and France, while Canada only just stops short at £4.98 on average.

Instead, your best bet is heading to Africa.

Of the study’s top 10 countries with the cheapest pints worldwide, eight of them were located in Africa.

Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, topped the charts – with an average cost of 68p per beer. But Addis Ababa in Ethiopia (70p), Lome in Togo (71p), Kigali in Rwanda, Vientiane in Laos, and Lagos in Nigeria (all 74p) weren’t far off.

Now to find some cheap flights that’ll make the long-haul trip worthwhile.
